What are the Award categories?
In total, there are 11 Awards presented in two categories: Multicultural and Media.
In addition, there are two overall awards: The National Action Plan Against Racism (NPAR) Award and the Judges’ Special
Award, both of which are selected by the judging panel, and to which entries are not invited. This year, the Iris O’Brien
Foundation will provide a special bursary worth EUR 5,000 to an individual or organisation which has positively responded to
cultural diversity in Ireland. Foras na Gaeilge will also present an award to an individual or organisation which promotes the
Irish language and culture amongst new immigrants.
Multicultural Awards
This category honours Irish and non-Irish nationals,
groups and institutions in Ireland who have excelled in
the promotion and celebration of cultural diversity on the
island of Ireland.
One Multicultural Award will be made in each of the
following categories:
- Individual
- Groups in non-governmental sector
- Institutions in the public sector
- Companies in the private sector
- Multinational organisation
Media Awards
One Media Award will be made in each of the following
categories:
- Print media
- Broadcast media
- Visual media (DVD, Video, TV, Film)
- Northern Ireland Media Award
- Student media
- Online/web
Irish and non-Irish journalists/ media groups including
print, broadcast, online and visual from the island of Ireland
are invited to submit works which promote and inform
cross-cultural understanding and co-operation, which they
have published or transmitted between 1 January 2008
and 31 August 2008.
National Action Plan Against Racism
(NPAR) Award
The NPAR Award honours an individual or organisation
in the public service for combating racism or promoting
equality. Entries are not sought from the public for this
award.
Judges’ Award
A special Judges’ Award will be made where, in the opinion
of the judges, a particular and special contribution has been
made during the past year by an individual or organisation
in combating racism or promoting equality for Black and/or
ethnic minorities. Entries are not sought from the public for
this award.
Iris O’Brien Foundation Bursary
This year, a special bursary worth EUR 5,000 will be given to
support an individual or organisation for a project which
encourages cultural diversity in Ireland. The winner will be
selected from entries received for the 2008 MAMA Awards.
